The key to success in organizing is to start small.   Organizing your purse should be a quick and easy task.   This five step process can be applied to anything you want to organize.   After you're done organizing your purse, sit down with the kids and have them organize their backpacks.

STEP 1-  Take everything out of your purse/backpack.  EVERYTHING!

STEP 2-  Throw out the trash - the wrappers, the old lists, etc.

STEP 3-  Clean it out.  Shake the purse/backpack over a garbage can to get out all the little scraps of trash.

STEP 4-  Sort what doesn't belong.  This is decision time.   How many lipsticks do you really need to carry with you?   Do you have loose receipts in your purse?   These should be kept in a dedicated receipt file or envelope in the house but take them out of your purse.

STEP 5-  Put back in an organized way - use smaller bags or pouches to contain small items.

With the kids back in school and the holiday decorations put away, it's time to tackle those last few details of post-holiday organizing.  Here are five organizing ideas that can be completed quickly so you'll be prepared for the holidays in just 11 short months.

1.  LABEL LABEL LABEL
I'm sure holiday decorations have been taken down and stored but are the boxes labeled?  If you can access your decorations, you will be glad that you took the time to label the boxes this year.  When next year rolls around, you will be able to grab the box that you want without guessing what is in each container.

2.  RECYCLE CATALOGS
Sort through all the catalogs that you received prior to the holidays and recycle them.  Remember that you can access websites to see the same information.

3.  RECORD HOLIDAY CARDS

Do you still have your stack of holiday cards?  Make a two column list to record from whom you received a card and to whom you sent a card.  Keep this list on your computer or on paper but just be sure to keep it where you'll find it!  Recycle the cards or better yet, sent them to St. Jude's Children's Ranch where the kids will transform your old cards into new ones.  http://www.stjudesranch.org/shop/recycled-card-program/

4.  TRANSFER PHOTOS
Have you transferred the digital pictures that were taken over the holidays to your computer, flash drive, online storage, or some other backup storage media?  Don't let those pictures live on your camera indefinitely.

5.  GIFT STORAGE
If you shop for gifts all year long as I do, you will want to store those gifts in one spot such as a  guest closet shelf or a plastic bin.  Don't be guilty of hiding those gifts all over the house just to forget about them.  Be sure to keep a record of what you have purchased.   I recommend keeping track of this on the "notes" app on your phone.

What are your New Year's Resolutions?  One of mine is to start a blog!  If getting organized is one of your resolutions, I hope that you will refer to my blog regularly.  The purpose of my blog will be to inspire you to be organized one step at a time.  Being a mom, my first love is to help and support other moms out there.  Our kids are our fist priority so sometimes we get overwhelmed with laundry, cooking, shopping, etc that the pile of papers on the counter doesn't seem like an urgent matter.  At the same time, every time you walk by the stack of papers, you feel stressed and frazzled.  Or, worse yet, deadlines have been missed because the important papers have not been dealt with.  This is just one example of the disorganization that may be plaguing you.  What I hope to accomplish is to show you that being and staying organized will help you be a better mom.   In future blog entries, I will discuss simple organizing strategies.  Together we can fulfill our New Year's resolutions.  I wish you a very happy and organized 2012!
